The usual reason for this stamping a perfectly good rifle as for Drill Purpose was that it allowed the Regimental Armorer to write the weapon off and  apply for a brand new often far better replacement rifle

The scabbard shell is a solid example being straight as an arrow with a few tiny dents

This Burnside Cavalry "Saddle Ring" Carbine in . 54 caliber is offered in very good collectible condition. It is marked on the frame, breech block, loading lever, and under the barrel with serial number 21302, which is in the middle of wartime production. Springfield Research records indicate serial numbers in this range were being delivered in May June 1864, however there are no blocks of serial numbers we can find
