The sculptural cones, dramatic flower spikes, and architectural foliage make them distinctive in any garden setting and they are among the most important food sources for native birds. In Perth gardens they perform strongly given the right conditions: full sun, sandy or gravelly well drained soil, and phosphorus free fertiliser. High phosphorus is toxic to most Proteaceae
