This is an original German WWII MP 40 Maschinenpistole 40 battlefield dug relic that was recovered somewhere in Europe and later stabilized for display. The exact recovery location and circumstances have unfortunately been lost, but the surviving configuration, heavily corroded surfaces, original Bakelite components, and frozen internal bolt give it the unmistakable appearance of a long buried battlefield relic. This
